When algorithms become an issue

Wangari Studio had the honor to attend the release of Hyperidealen 2026, a report from Tjejzonen in collaboration with KICKS, about beauty pressure driven by social media algorithms on structural and measurable levels.

Hyperidealen maps the connection between social media, beauty ideals and young people’s mental health. Based on validated data combined with insights from over 9000 annual support hours with girls aged 10-25, the report shows a concerning picture of how digital environments are shaping emotional wellbeing in society.

92% of young girls report feeling negativ pressure linked to beauty ideals online. One in ten young people between 16-21 say that the pressure contributes to self-harm behaviours or suicidal thoughts. 20% report eating disorder-related behavoriurs connected to appearance pressure.

Let that sink in.

Children and teenagers are paying with their mental health for the current direction of social media and tech development. One of the most striking insights in Hyperidealen 2026 is the long-term pattern behind the decline in mental health among young people, linked to smartphone adoption and alorithm-driven content distribution. Not only in Sweden, but internationally.

One of the strongest perspectives from Tjejzonen is the call for a more constructive conversation around social media and mental health. Social media platforms are not the enemy, and an ban is not the way to go. Young people describe positive experiences and value linked to community, creativity, identity and belonging online.

The report calls for regulation and stronger protection of young users, with data collection as one key aspect. Most importantly, Hyperidealen 2026 makes one thing clear; this is not an individual responsibility and no singel actor can solve this alone.

Tech giants, brands, schools, organizations, politicians, policymakers, parents and creators all influence the environment young people grow up in. At Wangari Studio, we believe communication carries responsibility alongside reach. Social media have extraordinary power to inspire and mobilize positive change, but only if we actively influence eachother in that direction.

For us, it means building partnerships, campaigns and narratives that strengthen people instead of adding pressure. Behind every impression is a human being. And the unlimited potential to increase hope and inspiration.

It’s up to us to do good.
